Why Galena Illinois is a Perfect Weekend Getaway for History Lovers

Grand historic buildings, centuries-old war sites, and artifacts from former presidents are just a few of the aspects that make Galena, Illinois a perfect place for history buffs. Those looking to spend a weekend in town will find that even the local accommodations are geared toward history lovers, with many of the B&Bs and Inns built in the mid-1800s. Outdoor lovers will also have an easy time enjoying Galena where the rolling hills and scenic countryside have been compared to Ireland. Winding, river-lined hiking trails and parks dotted with greenery can also be found in this charming Illinois town. 

Former President Ulysses S. Grant Resided Here

While visiting Galena, travelers can tour the house of former US president, Ulysses S. Grant. Grant was the country's 18th president and served from 1869 to 1877. Prior to his presidential term, Grant was a commanding general in the Civil War–eventually leading Union armies to victory. According to the White House website, Grant spent some of his time as president working “to implement Congressional Reconstruction and to remove the vestiges of slavery.”

While touring his former Galena home, visitors can admire the Italianate-style architecture and learn more about the former president's life and accomplishments. In addition to Grant’s house, curious travelers can also tour the nearby home of Elihu B. Washburne. Under Grant’s presidential term, Washburne was first appointed Secretary of State then, later, appointed as ambassador to France. In Washnurne’s home, visitors will notice a Greek Revival style, which was popular in Galena during the time of construction.

An Abundance of Museums & Historical Sites to Explore

In addition to the two historical homes listed above, Galena’s streets are lined with an abundance of museums and historic sites. In fact, more than half of the buildings in Galena are located within the National Register Historic District. History enthusiasts will want to add the following stops to their Galena itinerary:

  • Belvedere Mansion and Gardens is an 1857-era mansion, thought to be one of the best in town. The grand mansion features 22 rooms and some beautifully maintained gardens. Upon arrival, visitors will instantly realize what makes The Belvedere the “most often visited Italianate mansion in Galena for more than 33 years.”
  • Galena–Jo Daviess County Historical Society is a local museum beloved for it’s Civil War and Ulysses S. Grant exhibits. Visitors can spend time here learning about Galena’s past and admiring the Ulysses S. Grant hologram that greets museum-goers at the door. While touring the museum, visitors will also learn about Galena’s history with mining and steamboats.
  • The Old Blacksmith Shop is located less than a mile from the Galena–Jo Daviess County Historical Society and is over 100 years old. While touring the shop, visitors can expect to see old tools and equipment as well as forges that are still operable. During the touring season, visitors will get to see blacksmiths at work here too.
  • The Dowling House, built in 1826, is Galena’s oldest house. The limestone building once served as Galena’s only trading post and today, it’s available to tour.

Largest Steamboat Hub on the Mississippi River

In the past, steamboats were one of the main methods of transportation in Galena. In the mid-1800s, the town was considered “the largest steamboat port on the Mississippi River between St. Louis and St. Paul.” The boats brought goods in and were often used to export resources such as lead. Curious history lovers can learn all about the steamboats of years past at the Galena–Jo Daviess County Historical Society. Additionally, visitors can opt to spend the night at The Steamboat House–a Gothic Revival historic mansion built by a local steamboat builder in 1855. Today, the steamboat house is a beautiful bed and breakfast filled with cozy rooms and rich history.

In 1832, tensions over faulty treaties resulted in a 15-week war between American settlers and the local indigenous tribes including Meskwaki and Sauk. Today, remnants of this battle can be found throughout town. For a true deep dive into the history of the Black Hawk War, travelers can head to the nearby Apple River Fort State Historic Site in Elizabeth, Illinois.

Surrounding Nature Feels Untouched By Time

In addition to old buildings and artifacts from wars long past, Galena’s outdoor spaces are seemingly untouched by time. Visitors hoping for a little fresh air can take a stroll through Grant Park where historic cannons, monuments, and beautiful scenery are all on display. Next, take a longer hike along the Galena River Trail. The 8-mile trail runs alongside the Galena River and serves as the perfect spot to admire the tranquil countryside. Gateway Park is another ideal spot to enjoy Galena’s natural beauty. Here, park-goers will find 180 acres of land filled with rolling hills, trees, and hiking trails. 

Plenty of Cozy and Historic Accommodations

In Galena, even the accommodations are historic and unique. Between B&Bs from the 1800s and quaint Irish-inspired cottages set amongst the Galena rolling hills, visitors will have no problem finding somewhere memorable to spend their weekend. Some spots to consider staying at include:

Other historic hotels worth looking into include The Hancock House, The Galena Inn, and The Steamboat House. These unique buildings were built in 1891, 1856, and 1855, respectively.
